Classroom Management

Classroom management is a systematic approach in managing behavior within the class. Classroom management is pivotal in having an effective classroom as without it, learning time is lost. It is important to respond to students as individuals when implementing management strategies.  Classroom management is something that one must remain consistent with to establish a well-managed class. I use a behaviorism approach within my classroom, utilizing the positive reinforcement theory to help manage my class.

One example of my implementation of individual positive reinforcement in the classroom is through the distribution of P.O.W.E.R (Polite, Organized, Wise, Engaged, and Responsible) raffle ticket. When a student demonstrates this, they are given a raffle ticket to put their name on, and then put in the P.O.W.E.R. jar. One name is drawn at the end of the day for a prize.  I also implement group reinforcement. I do this by, giving points to tables for certain tasks they must work together on. The table with the most points at the end of the week gets to pick a prize. Lastly, I do a whole group reinforcement through giving stars to the class. If the whole class is on task and doing what they are supposed to do, get a star. One star lets them all do something special, after the class earns ten stars they get a freebie Friday afternoon!

Another example of how I manage my classroom is by allowing the students to have ownership over the classroom rules. To do this, we collaboratively make a classroom constitution. We try to phrase these statements in a positive way. An example of this is instead of saying, “do not run inside”, it will say “walking feet inside”, this support the positive reinforcement theory that I maintain to manage my class.

Through these efforts my classroom can manage efficiently where all students can have a positive learning experience.
